bio
Dilek Aydincioglu is a self-taught ceramic artist, researcher, and concept creator with a degree in linguistics. She has been deeply engaged in exploring and expanding the boundaries of contemporary ceramic artistry since 1998. Coming from a multicultural and artistic family background, she discovered clay as her medium early in life. In 1999, she started her non-functional ceramic studio at the Mergatroid Building in Vancouver, BC. During this time, she studied under ceramic artist Mas Funo, working on his approach to Japanese hand-building and firing techniques within the studio pottery tradition.
After her return to Istanbul, she started to work as a sub-brand under Aydincioglu Architecture & Engineering LTD primarily carrying out Modern Turkish Ceramic murals conservation projects, including commissioned design productions of contemporary tableware objects involving for chef’s tables.
Recently, in her Montréal studio, she has been working with pinch and slab building techniques under the studio pottery discipline. Her newly developed approach to the Japanese Nerikomi technique represents a unique contemporary style inspired by natural formations and geological processes. This innovative use of traditional techniques allows her to explore and capture the beauty of organic structures and layers, conveying meaningful stories based on deep emotions through her art.
Dilek’s creative process involves layering and blending different colored clays and porcelain to produce intricate patterns that reflect universal designs found in traditional crafts. This approach not only highlights her artistic vision but also fosters a sense of commonality by bridging cultures across the world. Her experimental methods and commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional Japanese Nerikomi enable her to create distinct and evocative ceramic works that captivate and inspire.
Additionally, in 2016, she established a branded studio focused on creating tabletop collections for chefs, known as Astras Ceramics / Astras Céramique. This brand is based on traditional pottery production methods and integrates cultural and material research. The objects' closeness to nature, sculptural-like forms, and non-traditional dining ware offer a unique and exciting way to experience and interpret gastronomic creations and the dining environment around us.
